La Catedral Nueva, or "New Cathedral"
Sightseeing in Spain picture - At the end of the 15th Century, as a result of the outstanding place occupied by the city of Salamanca, mainly due to the student´s affluence to the University, the construction of a new and more splendid cathedral was decided, in substitution of the other one that was getting small for the celebration of religious offices. The kings accepted the idea and ordered plans to architects Antón de Egas and Alonso Rodriges. As master builder, Juan Gil de Hontañón was nominated. When he died, his son Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón continued his work, who without abandoning the original Gothic project introduced Renaissance characteristics to the cathedral. Juan de Álava also participated. Construction concluded in 1733. Nevertheless, soon modifications were necesary, due to the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon, which caused serious damage to the main tower, walls and dome.
