Beginning May twenty-third I took the Queen III from Copper Harbor to the island for a four night, five day backpack trip. This was my forth trip to Isle Royale. I spent nights at Lane Cove, Chippewa Harbor, Moskey Basin, and Daisy Farm. The weather looked threatening most of the time but only rained on one particular day. The bugs were starting to become bothersome in the interior of the island but were much less prevalent at the camps on or near Lake Superior. On this trip I spotted no moose, the first time that I didn't see any, but I did hear for the first time a wolf pack howling into the night while at Chippewa Harbor. I did observe many fresh wolf paw tracks on many of the trails. It was especially pleasant spending time with the other hikers on the island, all fun and interesting people. Isle Royale is a very special place which I hope to visit as often as I am able. Enjoy a midwest island paradise.
