Jamila and children Tajikistan picture - Jamila is one of thousands of single mothers coping with the severe economic breakdown in the country as it affects the well-being of her children. Tajikistan is clearly the worst hit of all of the former Soviet Union since it fell apart in 1991. Today, over 80% of Tajiks live with an income less than $2 a day, while just a decade ago they enjoyed full access to health, education and work. They live a meagre lifestyle in their mud-brick house (with no window panes to keep out the sub-zero winter cold!). Despite this, Jamila and her family are some of the warmest people we have had the pleasure to meet in the region.
