Tajikistan, 93% of which is covered by mountains, offers some interesting challenges for driving. The route from Dushanbe to Khorogh (in the western oblast of Gorno Badakshan) has two main routes, a main highway and a difficult backroads route through the mountains. The main route is, from time to time, closed because of security issues, leaving the only alternative this rugged old access road that follows the Amu Darya for more than a full day. (The Amu Darya is the powerful river dividing Afghanistan and Tajikistan). Difficult, but a tremendous experience. But don't do it in July - temperatures hover around 50 degrees Celcius.
