1885 AMOSKEAG Steam Fire Engine
Attractions & Amusements in Alberta picture - Between 1885 and 1910, Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge bought steam fire engines. They could only be used in urban areas where fire hydrants were in place to provide water for the fire hoses. Pulled to the fire by 3 specially trained fire horses, the boiler steamed up on the way. A great improvement over bucket brigades and hand powered pumpers. A steam engine usually lowered fire insurance rates for property owners.
