Roman Bridge and the Duero River, Zamora
Sightseeing in Spain picture - South of León is the province of Zamora; the provincial capital of the same name was the scene of many fierce struggles between the Moors and the Christians during the Reconquista, in which the Spanish hero El Cid figured prominently. The town has a Romanesque cathedral and several 12th-century churches. Zamora itself is surrounded by walls, a river and castle fortifications. This is a city with a medieval flavor, artistically marked by the Romanesque style, of which it has many churches and a magnificent cathedral, topped by a strange Byzantine dome. Zamora is on the right bank of the Duero River, at the beginning of the western Castilian meseta.
