Puerto de la Cruz is the main tourist resort of the Northern part of the Island. It is a cosmopolitan city with excellent hotels and the great Lago de Martiánez, an architectural wonder of the renowned international artist César Manrique from Lanzarote. He used many natural elements of the island to landscape the area. The Lago is a vast salt-water pool, a great place for swimming. In the middle of the Lago there is a restaurant and a night-club. Set against the magnificent backdrop of Mount Teide, Puerto de la Cruz (or El Puerto for short) is the oldest holiday resort on Tenerife. The colonial grandeur that attracted the first British visitors a hundred years ago still remains, and although modern tourism has left its mark, this is a working town with a very distinctive identity.
