Buildings in Pittsburgh--downtown picture - The gold-domed church in the lower right is St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church on the South Side. St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church was founded in 1891 and is considered to be the first and oldest Catholic Church of the Byzantine Rite, meaning that it is part of the eastern Christian Church in countries like Greece and Turkey. The church was built in 1895 with three Byzantine domes and was enlarged in 1917 with five more domes -- a reminder of home to the immigrants who worked in the mills. Churches designed in the Byzantine style have distinctively-shaped domes and the Greek cross. Byzantine architecture combines elements from Greek, Roman, and Islamic styles. To build the church, parishioners sacrificed things for their own homes. The church is now famous for pierogies (Pyrohy in Ukrainian), dumplings filled with cottage cheese, potato, mixed or sauerkraut. The "church ladies" make and sell thousands per week to earn money to maintain the church.
