We spent 1 night in Sedona, then 3 nights in Scottsdale. We planned day excursions from Scottsdale. Our first was on the Apache Trail. A hair-raising drive for a while on unpaved road. If you have a fear of heights, or don't like hairpin turns where you can't see the cars coming the other way, turn around at Tortilla Flat. Otherwise, hold onto the dashboard and prepare to drive one of the most crooked roads in the nation.
