There are many cave-like dwellings, chapels and monasteries here, all carved in the walls of the soft volcanic rock. Many date to the time of the Cappadocian fathers of the 4th century. Christians who were fleeing Arab persecution sought refuge in these artificial caves. There's a lot of history here.
