Nearby, in the town of Derinkuyu, there is a vast underground city that was discovered only a few years ago, in 1963, when an inhabitant knocked through a wall in his house and discovered a secret room. The room led to another room, and another, and another ... Two thousand years ago, the Christians hid in these caves from the Roman armies sent out to capture and kill them. Some of the caves went down as much as eighteen levels. Thousands of Christians spent much of their lives in underground cities, some with as many as 1500 people. They lived below , raised families, and died down there . Finally, one of the early Roman emperors became a Christian, and the people could finally come up out of the darkness , and live in the world we know and so easily take for granted.
