Most of our group went down just a floor or two. Several of us went down a bit deeper until we became claustrophobic and came up. We'd really had enough. By the way, this subterranean city has 18 levels and is 330 feet deep! It's hard to imagine people living down there, for years and years. This city and others like it are the prototypes for the underground fortresses where Bin Laden and his followers are presumed to be hiding today in nearby Afghanistan or Pakistan. So far, six underground cities have been discovered, each capable of accomodating several thousand people. The cities are connected by tunnels, some of which are six miles long. Who built them? We don't know, but the construction must have taken several hundred years. It's almost impossible for us to imagine what life was like in this area two thousand years before Christ ... four thousand years ago.
