On the last day of our Orientation week we visited Robben Island on which the apartheid government kept many of its political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela for a time. I was expecting something like Alkatraz, but really the prison occupies very little of the space on the Island. We saw wild ostrich as we drove around and visited the quarry where the prisoners worked. One of the most impressive parts of the whole experience is that all the tour guides are former inmates, and offer an amazing unique perspective.
