This second part of Penang National Park will take you to Kerachut Beach. This beach is famous for the meromictic lake. The lake has two layers of water warm saline at the top and cool fresh water at the bottom. The sea water rushes into the lake to occupy the top layer while the fresh mountain streams flow to the bottom. The lake is seasonal. For 6 months it will be flooded and the other 6 months it will be drained dry. During the scientific expedition to turn the forest reserve into a national park, a dolphins skull was found at the bottom of the dry lake. There is also a turtle hatchery site at the southern end of the beach. A concrete jetty was built at Kerachut Beach. There are camping facilities available including pipe water, open hall, campsites, A-shaped huts, toilets and bathrooms. Photographs exhibit here were taken along the way to the beach from Teluk Bahang. Please refer to Penang National Park I for the first installment. Permission is needed if you want to enter the park.
