Novodevichiy Convent: a serene outpost
Russia picture - This peaceful sixteenth century convent offers an oasis of quiet in the middle of Moscow. Its pond is said to have inspired Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. Napoleon's troops tried to blow it up, but it was saved by nuns who blew out the fuses. Today, its cemetery is the final resting place of Russian cultural icons Chekhov, Gogol, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, as well as former Soviet premier Nikita Krushchev.
