Gravensteen in a snow storm
Ghent picture - The 'Gravensteen' has been constructed around 1180 by Fillips of Alsasse, count of Flanders. Since the 14th century, after the counts moved to more comfortable mansions, it has had several purposes: mint, court, jail and cotton mill. Inside the castle is a museum about the history of prison life with a spooky collection of medieval torture instruments.
