Only 850,000 souls and almost as many tourists populate the country. Nearly half the locals are of Indian descent having been brought there as imported labour by the British to work on the sugar cane farms 125 years ago. They adhere strictly to the traditions of their motherland though few have ever been there in the last two or three generations. In dress and language they look like something out of a Bollywood movie.

The native Fijians are extremely friendly. We felt very safe there especially since they gave up cannibalism a few decades ago. The kids are really cute and the schoolboys are particularly attractive in their school uniforms; a clean white shirt, school tie and freshly pressed skirt. Yes, I said SKIRT! Im not sure what influence this attire has on these impressionable youths but I spotted more than a few, who were barely out of their school skirts before they started plucking their eyebrows, shaving their legs, donning stilettos and, voila: before you know it; Bobs your auntie. Taking into consideration that the native women, once out of their teens, have a propensity to resemble sides of beef in moo moos with necks as thick as telegraph poles, and the men are even larger; In drag this in not a pretty sight.
