I was very disappointed in having had to cancel a trip to China in April because of the SARS epidemic because one of the stops on our itinerary was to Suzhou, a town famous for their classical gardens.
When I went to Portland in August, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there is a Chinese garden there. The garden is called Lan Su Yuan, garden of awakening orchids. Suzhou is Portland's sister city and as such, in 1999, Chinese and American designers and artisans worked in tandem to create this marvelous urban garden.
