Gion Kyoto picture - If you have ever read the book "Memoirs of a Geisha" you would be quite familiar with the streets of Gion. This neighborhood is one of the last surviving ancient neighborhoods in Kyoto and Japan. These old houses contain some of the most well reknowned tea houses and pleasure quarters in Kyoto. However, I would say these streets are most famous for housing a traditional Japanese icon - the geisha. These well accomplished artisans are striking for their beauty and sophistication yet mysterious at the same time. They are like cats - each girl has her own personality, and you are never supposed to know what they are thinking. Extremely popular in ancient Japan up to the 1800s, these girls are dwindling in numbers as the cost to maintain their million dollar silk kimono wardrobes and specific makeup is staggering...even for the most wealthy patrons.
