Faces are representations of Lokesvara (SE Asian term for Avalokitesvara). Avalokitesvara is the embodiment of compassion and source of the boddhistava vow (To liberate all sentient beings). Tara (like Kwan Yin & beloved deity of Tibetan Buddhism) is believed to come from a tear from Avalokitesvara.
