Tasik Kenyir covers an area of 369 square kilometres. It was constructed between 1978 and 1985. The dam is reputed to be the largest of its kind in South East Asia. There are 340 islands in Kenyir Dam with the biggest about the size of Penang island. There are 30 rivers feeding the lake, 25 waterfalls and at least 25 known species of fish. Information displayed on the history and developments of the dam can be found at the visitors' centre. For anglers, it is a heaven. There are at least 25 species of fish for the hard core anglers. Toman (snakehead fish) is reputed to give the most fighting time to anglers. Estuaries are the best places for fishing. Watch out for the sebarau chasing the young toman. You should cast your line to get the toman as the bigger toman will be selfishly protecting the young ones.

For the adventurers, one can hike to Gunung Gagau inside Taman Negara, the second highest mountain after Gunung Tahan in the National Park. You will have to book a guide from the Jabatan Perhilitan at Kuala Berang for 3D2N's adventure. There are other mountains outside the national park and within the dam itself.

There are ample nature trails to the many waterfalls in Tasik Kenyir. Trekkers will be rewarded with crystal clear mountain streams flowing into the lake. Camping beside the waterfalls is an experience not to be missed. At night, you can listen to all the strange noises of the forest. Lay down on the ground and gaze at the open sky for the stars and galaxies are the only natural heritages that are yet to be polluted!

Cavers will have a delightful time exploring the Bewah Cave and the Taat Cave situated at Pulau Bewah. Bewah Cave is known for the many artifacts, Neolithic axes, flints and human skeleton of some 3000 years of history. There are also caves racers, spiders, crickets, bats and other creatures of the dark.

Water and water everywhere ....... what else but swimming and water sport will come naturally. Boating, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, waterscootering are some of the fun things to do in Tasik Kenyir.

If nothing interest you above, then laze around the chalets and gaze at the distant speeding boats. Listen to the breeze and hear the ripple of the waves. At least you are away from your monotomous and hectic chores for a while.

How To Get There From Penang, head for the town of Grik in Perak and continue along the East-West highway to Pasir Putih in Kelantan and proceed south passing through Jertih until a junction with a big signboard of Tasik Kenyir. Follow the sign board to reach Kuala Berang. There are a few operators running their resorts from here.

Best Time To Visit Between February to October to avoid the monsoon season.
