At Tambon Thalay Noi of Phatthalung province in Southern Thailand, most population can fly. Well, this is not surprising - since the place is the home to a huge varieties of waterbirds. Larger birds like Painted Stork, Black headed Egrets and Grey Heron. Not to mentioned Ducks and smaller birds. In the meantime, throughout the whole year, colonies of Purple Swamphen and Little Commorant maintained that festive ambience. The name Thale Noi, which means "Small Sea" derives from its 30 square klilometers size of fresh water lake. It is connected to the "Big Sea" Thalay Luang, or Songkla Lake [sea water] via a canal of brackish water. The Klong Nang Riam. The water level in the lake is only waist deep. Of course, to dramatise, you are advise to visit thsi destination in the month of October thru February. It is the northern migartory season. We had a bountiful day here in late August 2005. For a simple boat ride to the northern edge of the lake and back. It costed us Bahts 300. That would be on hour worth of boating. For a round trip to the canal and round the lake. It would take 2 hours and the fee marginally increased to Bahts 400. For nature lovers and birders, it is best to start early. The journey would be enjoyable and tolerable. For us, we were bird photogrpahers, the timing and lightings were below expectation.
