The annual migration of birds. Each year, thousands of birds from hundred over species escape the northern winter's period, by flying south. Among these birds, two groups are specially visible. The Raptors and the Waders. Raptors are large carnivorous birds. Those migratory raptors passing over Malaysia are Honey Buzzards, Goshawk, Sapprowhawks and Black Baza. Very interesting fact is that these Raptors are highly territorial in their own habitats. Each requiring many square kilometers, as their personal hunting ground. Yet, in the migratory season, they gather into flocks numbering over thousands. Flying south. Among the many routes in the last leg, this one across the strait of Malacca is exceptionally unique. They would gather and fly over the open sea in flock. Even more spectacular would be their northern bound return journey. Each year, they would wait and within a week or so, during Easter, they would fly across th Strait en masse. This article is about the birders, who would gather over one such specific weekend. The place, quite a narrow part of the Straits. With a small hill at the coast. Witness and participate that phenomenal events with the Raptors. Most would reach the Malaysian mainland utterly exhausted, coasting at very low height. Once passing the shoreline, with the land thermal, they soar skywards. Re-grouping into fair crowd before drifting north. From Taiwan and Japan, the group was counted to be over 13,000 birds. By the time they reach the Isthmus of Kra, at Chumpon, the number would be around 8,000. Then in Malaysia, and those coming over the strait, the number dropped to below 5,000 birds. Hope you enjoy the pictures taken of the gathering.
