Ningxia was a surprise for us. We were expecting a pleasant, laidback and probably rather backward small town but instead it was a bustling metropolis not that unlike Shenzhen, minus the chaos and filth that plague the southern boomtown. There were even Cantonese songs playing all around. Apparently that lots of Hongkong businessmen have investments in Ningxia, which explains the strong Cantonese/Hongkong influence in the province.
