The structure is over 160 feet high and could in the ancient times hold over 50,000 spectators who entered the Colosseum through its eighty doors. It was the largest building of its kind in the ancient world, seating up to 50,000 spectators. Romans came to watch gladiator and animal fights, chariot racing, and even mock naval battles. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum was abandoned for centuries until it was used as a fortress in the medieval times.
