This world-famous Baroque fountain was designed in 1762 by Nicola Salvi on the original site where Agrippa's acqueduct Acqua Vergine (19 B.C.) ended. Merging the flow of sculpture and water, it represents the Seven Seas, presided over by the God Neptune in the central vaulted niche. The rearing seahorse at left symbolizes the ocean in turmoil and the tranquil horse at right, its vast quietude. Despite its imposing facade, the Trevi Fountain often tempts summer revelers to take a forbidden swim. The legend says that anyone who tosses a coin over their shoulder into the Trevi Fountain will some day return to Rome. This legend, and the fountain's architectural beauty, make the Trevi Fountain one of the most popular and photographed spots in Rome.
