At the heart of the city known as La Serenissima--the Most Serene--is the beautiful Ponte di Rialto, which leads to the colorful marketplace. Here, street stalls draped with scarves and gondoliers' hats do a lively trade in fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, and scores of other goods. The vendors hawk their wares loudly against the backdrop of ancient palazzi, some now crumbling into ruin, and waterside houses of commerce.
