This bridge is one of the more well-known bridges in Europe and it spans the Grand Canal in the commercial heart of the city. On either side of the bridge, tourists and natives alike shop in the stores that line the entire span of the bridge. There are fruit and vegetable stands as well as fresh fish stands that have been in existence for centuries. The name of the bridge stems from the Spanish &#34;rivo alto,&#34; meaning &#34;high bank.&#34; The solid stone bridge that is currently in place was built in 1591 after the collapse of earlier wooden structures. Until 1854, this bridge was the only way to cross the Grand Canal. </div></nolayer></noembed>
