Convention at Cheddar
A group of us from Ireland, England, Belgium and the USA visited Cheddar Gorge mid September this year 2004, where we held our Beauty and the Beast convention - a few of the thousands of fans of the series that starred Linda Hamilton, Ron Perlman and Roy Dotrice back in the late eighties. We actually held our Winterfest ceremony complete with candles and hot punch in the cavern named St Paul's Cathedral and due to a hiccup with staff got locked into Gough's cave after closing time. We had a wonderful time though and thought the Cheddar Gorge was spectacular!

Hullo, just wanted to say Good Job on the photos of the Caves. They are of unexpected interest to me after I learned that author J.R.R. Tolkien visited here back when and used them as a model for his Crystal Caves in "The Lord of the Rings." Even the Gorge matches descriptions used in his battle of Helm's Deep. I've no idea if anyone who comes here reads Tolkien, but it was a marvelous bit of Trivia for me, and it's grand to SEE what he saw when writing. Thank you for sharing! Cheers - Erin

Chedder Gorge is good. Went there today. The little shops around chedder are ok, but the cheese shop is wicked !!! Caves are a little scary at times. Pictures are nice too. Bob smart was a real help for me and my year for information as we now have to do a project. Thanks !

My great grandmother, Lucy Carter, I think, came to the US from Cheddar. She was employed as an upstairs maid there is all I know. We have pictures of relatives around thatched-roofed homes there. Also have Millards, Hulls and Roberts who also came from England, in my family.

I visited Cheddar last year and these are some beautiful examples of the caves. It makes me miss England for it's beauty. But you should have some more pic's of the town after all Cheddar is known for the cheese. And for all you confused people out there it is in England not Canada.

you are correct, they found the skeleton of a Woman actually, believed to be about 4 million years old, and linked it to many of the people still living in the area genetically, you can see the original skeleton if you visit the caves along with many more artifacts found in the caves.

Is this the place where a mummy called "Cheddar man" was discovered, and anthropologists did a study to try to find some genetic links with people in the area and found out that the teacher taking the students to visit the place was a relative of the caveman? Excellent pictures!!
