On 27 September Michaelle Jean became Canada's 27th Governor General, only the third woman to hold the Vice Regal position. She is also the youngest person ever elevated to this office, and the only one to have a young child at the time. Her Excellency's nomination by Prime Minister Martin and appointment by HM Queen Elizabeth continues the tradition of alternating the incumbent between representatives of Canada's two founding language groups.
