The town of Puigcerdà is founded by King Alfonso I (Second of Aragon) as an alternative capitol to the former locations occupied by the Earldom in previous centuries and because of its optimum strategic location. Puigcerdà was victim to successive sieges and occupations by French armies and during Carlist wars. The Gothic bridge of Roman origin in Sant Martí d'Aravó on the border of Guils is of remarkable historical evidence.
