In mid-August a group of us had the opportunity to go help out with a Habitat for Humanity build taking place in one of the townships called Khayelitsha. Sobering remnants of the apartheid government, the townships are entirely black communities on the outskirts of the major South African cities. This is poverty in a more extreme, more extensive form than you can imagine, and yet it is amazing to see the life and vitality in the residents. We spent half a day there with them and I cannot wait until we get a chance to go back.
