Entering Dubrovnik
Eastern Europe picture - Although it has only 50,000 inhabitants, Dubrovnik is Croatia's most famous city. Its thick stone walls protected its citizens for seven centuries until it was bombarded and largely destroyed by Yugoslav troops in the 1990s. But with the help of Unesco and the European Union, Dubrovnik has risen from the ashes and today boldly displays its past with few visible reminders of its recent trauma. Here, at the 500 year old main entrance to the fortified city, guards still man their posts with pikes.
