The week of September 15th through the 20th, a group of 27 people went 12 hours north of Santiago to Caldera, Chile to work with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild termite infested houses. That week happened to be the Independence holiday, Dieciocho, for Chile, all schools were on holiday. There were four sites, so our group split up into four different teams. Every site was at a different place in the process. The first day was the Destruction day, the site that I was on had to take apart a complete house, which was a lot of fun. The houses were not like many of the houses that you see, they are connected, which meant that we had to be careful not to take apart the neighbors house as well. When it came time to start digging the foundation, there was such a thick layer of concrete, that we had to rent jackhammers, which helped a lot. That thursday, the 18th of September, we took a day off because all the locals were celebrating the holiday. We went to the beach which was about 7 minutes by taxi. It was windy and was a little brisk in the morning and in the late afternoon, but it got nice at mid day. No one went in the water though, that was way too cold. Our last day of work, we switched up the groups a little and some of us went to other sites, where the houses were finished, but the painting and tiling were left. I painted the interior walls of this house a melon orange, it was quite interesting. We were all tired and ready to go back to Santiago by the end of the week. But it was a very successful and fun trip.
