The town of Shimla came into existance when the 'GORKHA WAR' ended in 1815-16 and the British decided to retain certain pockets of Military out-posts and Sanitaria as Holiday homes. The first house built in 1822 was for Capt. Charles Pratt Kennedy, the newly appointed Political officer to the Hill state. In 1864 under the Viceroy John Lawrence, Shimla was officially declared as the Summer Capital, which, it was till India's Independence in 1947.
