The town of Shimla came into existance when the 'GORKHA WAR' ended in 1815-16 and the British decided to retain certain pockets of Military out-posts and Sanitaria as Holiday homes. The first house built in 1822 was for Capt. Charles Pratt Kennedy, the newly appointed Political officer to the Hill state. In 1864 under the Viceroy John Lawrence, Shimla was officially declared as the Summer Capital, which, it was till India's Independence in 1947. In Shimla the Indo-Pak division was undertaken and the Historic Indo-Pak agreement was signed in Shimla - commonly known as SHIMLA AGREEMENT. Naggar Was the Capital of KULU and Naggar Castle was built by Raja Sidh Singh. It is built on the river Naggar and has JAGTI PATT TEMPLE Inside. 'URUSVATI HIMALAYAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE' was founded by Madam and Prof. ROERICH on 12th.July1928. Their sons continued the rearch into the Anciant Asian Art. Older son George (Married DEVIKA RANI of the early Indian Movies fame) became the Director and the younger son Svetoslav became the Vice President. The Institute still is active and the Roerich house is open to the public.
