The village of Utsjoki with its 600 inhabitants is the center of the municipality of Utsjoki. There are altogether over 1 500 inhabitants in the municipality, and, of these, two thirds are Sami. Reindeer herding, fishing and hunting are the main sources of living. The public administration and today especially tourism also provide jobs for the population. Year after year, The River Teno and salmon fishing attract travellers to Utsjoki.

In spite of its small size, Utsjoki has a lot to offer the visitor in terms of services: there are shops, banks and a post office as well as accommodation and catering services, a swimming hall and a tennis court in the village.
