This is an extremely rare Northern hairy nosed wombat, seen here at the Wildlife Wonderland in Bass Strait in Vic. The cuddly wombat is native to Australia and is nocturnal.It features a solid plate of armor on its back side. In the event of a collision with a car, which is a fairly common occurance, the animal turns its back on the offending vehicle. Although the wombat may be killed and the car severely damaged in due to the armor, the young in the pouch (yes, the wombat is a marsupial) is protected. This results in several orphaned wombats, several of which are moved to sanctuaries such as this.
