The pictures you will see here are situated in the communal department LAKEN (dutch) or LAEKEN (french), in the Northeast of Brussels. The area is also known as Heizel (dutch) or Heysel (french). These constructions were build in 1958 for the purpose to host the world exposition, better known as EXPO, which was held in Brussels. The most famous is of course the ATOMIUM, which represents the molecular structure of an iron-atom. At the present time the Atomium, which has in the meantime evolved into an emblem for the city of Brussels, is being renovated and therefore not accessible for the public.
