From deep within the city at dawn, I used a long lens to photograph the 1939 statue of Juan Jose de los Reyes Maltinez, remembered now as El Pipila. The huge stone statue, torch in hand, stands on the crest of a hill overlooking Guanajuato. El Pipila set fire to the door of a Spanish stronghold in the first major battle of the Mexican War of Independence in 1810.
