Battle of the Atlantic
Events in Ottawa picture - This was the longest battle of World War II. It began in 1939 and ended upon Germany's surrender in 1945. By war's end the RCN, with 323 ships and 100,000 members, was the world's third largest navy. 2,000 members died, 24 ships were lost, and 27 German U-boats were sunk. Canada's Merchant Marine ships made more than 25,000 crossings of the Atlantic, and 1,600 merchant sailors lost their lives.
