The Dutch royal family was given refuge here throughout the war, and Canadian soldiers were instrumental in liberating the Netherlands in 1945. Princess Margriet was born in Ottawa, and on the occasion of the annual Tulip Festival in May she laid a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
