The trouble began at immigration at LA airport. Either the plane was huge, or there were several planes landing at the same time. I had never seen so many people in the queue before. It took a while to get to an officer, and that only because someone cottoned on that San Diego flights were soon to leave and let those leaving for San Diego to get to the head of the queue.
