There was a massive steam locomotive workshop just beyond Central, at a place called Redfern. This is a rather squalid suburb of Sydney, not known for its security. Two of the bays of the steam loco workshop have been preserved intact. Here is one of them. The rest of the workshop has been fitted with cladding, false ceilings and airconditioning, and converted into a modern office complex. A visit to the other half of the shops makes this view an even more sordid reminder of the glories of steam.
