Hi Ellie! I travelled with Exodus Travels (http://www.exodustravels.co.uk/), a British company, and I was part of a group of six travellers, with a British guide and an Iranian guide, and as it happened the British guide was a woman. While I sympathise with your reluctance to go with a group, Iran isn't the easiest of countries to travel solo - getting the tourist visa can be problematic without a local travel company to vouch for you, and when you're there, English isn't widely spoken, and the Roman alphabet isn't even used much on signs. Having said that, the people were generally very friendly and curious to meet westerners, and I never felt at all threatened. Email me!

Dear Andy, Thanks so much for your good photos of Iran! I have been there twice (1970 & 76) and would like to go again in 2004. Do you know any good guide I could contact, a well-educated woman? I don't like to go with large groups, also not so many people want to visit Iran, these days! thanks for any up-to-date info. We went inside the tomb of the bro. of 8th Imam, in Shiraz, that was fantastic! I have photos too but haven't figured out how to post them, yet!
