In the pre-dawn hours of September 15, 2001, tragedy struck. Three sections of the causeway at its highest point collapsed after the bridge was hit by a barge. Tragically, nine automobiles plunged into the channel and eight motorists were killed in the accident. The bridge was repaired & reopened 2 months later on Nov 21st, 2001. In the meantime, ferries were pressed into service.
