I had been visiting the city of Shiraz in January 1979, and just as my bus was about to leave Shiraz for the city of Khorramshahr in Khuzestan Province, we got caught up in a violent clash between supporters of the monarchy wawing sticks and portrays of the royals on one side, and revolutionaries wawing portrays of Ayatollah Khomeini on the other. As we left the battle scene, teargas filled the air as did shouts of &#34;Javid Shah!&#34; (Long live the king!) and &#34;Margbar Shah!&#34; (Death to the king!) </div></nolayer></noembed>
