If a pilgrim was too sick or injured to continue his pilgrimaga, he could enter the Iglesia de Santiago in Villafranca del Bierzo through this Puerta del Perdon. By taking communion here, his sins would be pardoned in the same manner as if he had completed his pilgrimage in Santiago de Compostela.
