Rideau Hall, the Governor General's residence
Neighborhoods in Ottawa picture - Built by Scottish stonemason Thomas MacKay in 1838, and surrounded by a magnificent 79 acre (32 ha) park, it was bought in 1867 for $82,000 by the Government of Canada to be the permanent residence of the Governor General. Since then it has been enlarged several times, most recently in 1914, to better fulfill its role as the focal point of political, diplomatic and social life in the capital. On or about New Year's Day there is the traditional levee. Both residence and art treasures tours are available, exept when diplomatic receptions preclude this.
