Lalezar Street - Tehran 1937
picture - Tehran's former pleasure district. Prior to the revolution of 1979 this was where you would find an abundance of cabarets, theaters and nightclubs. This picture is interesting because in 1937 the religious veil, turbans, the traditional outfits of mullahs, beards and anything that the Shah of the time, Reza Shah, deemed backwarded were banned. People were not allowed to set up shops on the sidewalks, and sheep, donkeys and camels were banned from the large cities like Tehran. Thus Tehran adopted a European image with women and men dressing in European clothes, and the streets were clean and neat. It didn't last long though as the Americans and Brits forced the Shah to abdicate in favor of his son, who lifted the ban, and pretty soon things were back to normal again.
